What
is that?
To keep track of the
parishioners' knowledge of religion, the parish priest made lists of
all persons in the parish, household by household, in The
Husförhörslängderna, or translated into English: Household
Examination Rolls, Clerical surveys.
The year they start
are very varying in different parts of the country. In some dioceses
we will find many clerical surveys from the 1600s, other generally
start around 1800.
These records were
kept continously, in big books, every volume covering mostly a
period of five to ten years.
What
is a parish?
A parish is a
geographical area. All people in the same parish went to the same
church, were registered in the same books, and were buried in the
same churchyard.
In
Husförhörslängden you`ll find names of all family members, birth
dates and place (or at least the years). Sometimes notes if they had
moved, marriage dates, deathdate, their knowledge about the religion
and sometime quite interesting notes. The priest could write
personal notes about the persons.
The register
of all births and christenings in
a parish, Födelseböcker and Dopböcker, give
informations about birthdate, christening date, child`s name and the
parents name. Where they lived, name of farm, and names
of the witnesses of the christening.

The records of death
and burial are Dödsböcker and sometime named
Begravningsböcker. Usual notes are the name of the deceased, the
date of death and burial, where the person lived. Sometimes even the
cause of death.
The marriage records
are Lysningsböckerna and Vigselböckerna. These
registers contain the date of the banns ( the priest tell the
congregation about the forthcoming marriage), the mariage date and
names of the couple. Where they lived and sometimes even their age,
their parents names.
